Established in 1985, the National Youth Affairs Research Scheme (NYARS) is a co-operative funding program between the Australian, State and Territory Governments. It facilitates nationally based research into factors affecting young people. NYARS research findings assist with the formulation and assessment of policy development and implementation by Australian, State and Territory Ministers and Departments responsible for youth affairs.
NYARS operates under the auspices of the Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA). MCEETYA chooses the topics for the annual NYARS research program from a short-list developed collaboratively by jurisdictions.
The Australian Government (through the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations) provides half the annual NYARS funding of $240 000, with the States and Territories contributing the rest on a pro rata basis determined by their youth populations.
The current research project is “Body Image and Disadvantaged/Vulnerable Youth.” Body image is consistently ranked as a top concern for young people, including vulnerable young people. To understand more about the effects of poor body image and what interventions can help, the Office for Youth, within the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, has commissioned the Social Policy Research Centre to investigate what body image means to disadvantaged youth, focusing in particular on Indigenous young people and young people who are homeless. The final report from this project is due in March 2012.
