Participants

Five hundred Prizes are available nationally each year. Allocation of Prizes between the states and territories is based on each state and territory's relative share of the Year 12 population. Prizes are also awarded to students who won medals as part of Australia's team in the International Mathematics, Informatics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology Olympiads and International Baccalaureate Diploma Graduates who achieve the maximum international score of 45.

Criteria for the selection of prize winners are set by state and territory assessment and certification authorities, who submit nominees to the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations in February each year. Prize winners must be Australian Citizens or permanent residents of Australia.

The names of Prize winners (where their permission has been obtained) are announced by the Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth once the award nomination process is finalised.
