The joint statement issued by the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister, The Case for an Education Revolution in our Schools, outlines our vision for an education revolution in Australia’s schools. It highlights in particular the importance of literacy and numeracy as the foundations upon which all further learning is built. |
The 2005 National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy and the 2008 National Numeracy Review and other evidence suggest that the key influences on children’s literacy and numeracy learning outcomes centre around effective teaching practices, leadership and whole-school approaches and the use of data to drive improvement. |
As the first step to improving practice in the key areas of teaching, leadership and the effective use of data, the Australian Government will invest $40.2 million in 29 literacy and numeracy pilot initiatives focusing on these areas. |
To build on the pilots, the Australian Government will work closely with states, territories, education authorities and other stakeholders to develop a National Action Plan for Literacy and Numeracy to lift the performance of all students. |
