The Australian Government has committed $3.6 million to the establishment of a National Workers’ Memorial in Canberra. The memorial will pay tribute to those who have lost their lives as a result of workplace incidents, accidents and disease and will be a place to reflect on the evolving values, ideas and aspirations of the Australian community in relation to workplace safety.
The memorial will be located in Kings Park on the North shore of Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin and will provide an important focal point for the national commemoration of Workers’ Memorial Day, recognised internationally on 28 April each year.
The winning design “Workers Glade” by architectural firm Johnson Pilton Walker was selected following a national design competition conducted by the NCA on behalf of DEEWR.
Workplace Relations Minister Bill Shorten unveiled the winning design for the National Workers' Memorial on 14 March 2012 saying it was important to recognise the contribution Australian workers have had in building the nation.
The construction of the National Workers' Memorial is scheduled to be completed prior to the celebrations of the Centenary of Canberra in March 2013.
