How your local NDCO can help

 

Individuals and their families

The NDCO program can offer a range of assistance to help individuals who are:

  • at school and intend to participate in post-school education or training;
  • in the community and wish to participate in school, post-school education or training;
  • currently attending  post-school education or training ; or
  • transitioning from post-school education or training into employment.
     

If these points apply to you, then your local NDCO will be able to assist you in a number of ways including:

  • Providing you with information on support, services and resources available in the region.
  • Linking or referring you to local support services including other Government programs. These referrals may include health services, financial assistance, Centrelink, career services, advocacy services, tutoring, alternative teaching and learning, student networks and/or housing assistance. 
  • Providing you with information and advice to help you to make informed choices about the most appropriate post-school education or training institutions.  This may include linking you with appropriate institutional staff responsible for direct support services.
  • Providing you with advice and support to help you transition from school or the community to post-school education and training institutions. 
  • Providing you with advice and support to assist with your transition from post-school education or training to employment.

Schools, post-school education and training providers

NDCOs work collaboratively with education and training providers to improve participation and outcomes for learners with disability. To assist education and training institutions provide better services for people with disability, NDCOs can provide a range of advice and support. NDCOs can help your institution:

  • Improve your awareness and understanding of your responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005.
  • Ensure that your accommodation is appropriately equipped to meet the needs of people with disability.
  • Ensure that appropriate support is provided to students to assist them in their course of study at your education or training institution through building the capacity of your disability support staff.
  • Build better linkages with other key organisations within specific regions to ensure that the best possible assistance is available for people with disability.

Employment, disability support and community agencies

NDCOs work with employment, disability support and community agencies to improve the coordination, referral and collaboration of services within specific regions. NDCOs can provide assistance and support to your employment, disability support or community agency by:

  • Referring individuals and organisations to support services available through your agency. 
  • Improving your awareness and understanding of your responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.
  • Ensuring that your agency is appropriately equipped to meet the needs of people with disability.
  • Assisting in the development of appropriate services that support people with disability in their search for employment.
  • Building better linkages between your agency and other key organisations within specific regions to ensure that the best possible assistance is available for people with disability.
