Maritime industries workplace English language and literacy programme (SMIT): workbooks 1 - 4

This resource is intended to provide bridging support for non-English speaking background workers from the fishing industry who are preparing to apply for a licence to act as a coxswain in the industry. The application process is a 2-week full-time program and this resource provides support in English, numeracy and areas specific to the work of coxswains, with emphasis on working successfully through the application process. The resource is intended to be used in a 1-to-1 situation with a trainer so notes for the trainer are incorporated into the training materials. It is intended to be a working document and the publishers welcome suggestions for improvements. The Volume incorporates four workbooks:

  • An introduction to the specific language literacy and numeracy competency requirements ( which includes a pre-training assessment and interview sheet)
  • Written communication competencies for the Maritime industry ( which includes spelling and word games)
  • The interpretation of diagrams and worksheets for Maritime industries (which requires students to complete diagrams and forms)
  • Effective listening and memory retention for Maritime studies
  • The workbooks are highly specialised in terms of their content with most activities specifically targeting the competencies required for the coxswain licence, although these are not provided within this volume. There is also a separate Training Record Book for trainers and learners to complete which provides information on the core and elective modules required to obtain a coxswain licence.
