Laying the ground rules: safe work practices for asphalt crews: trainer and trainee guide

Laying asphalt can be dangerous and the properties of the hot asphalt can be incapacitating. This learning resource kit offers a series of important safety practices and reporting requirements in addition to the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. It is a Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) funded kit comprising a quick guide pocket book and a guided learning resource for trainers and trainees as well as a supporting video cassette. The pocket book provides a trainee with a take away, or on the job, ready reference. The issues and concepts covered include:

  • general strategies to encourage active learning
  • working safely with machines
  • identifying hazards
  • completing preoperational checks
  • wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • reporting incidents
  • properties of different chemicals involved in the laying of asphalt
