The evidence: assessing language, literacy and numeracy
This kit aims to assist workplace assessors and trainers in accurately identifying language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) requirements within training packages.
Content
It includes a video, CD-ROM and booklet.
Video and CD-ROM
The 18 minute video introduces three employees of the Sydney Opera House, David Ngan, a technical support worker, Siosi Gustave, from costings/event management and Tanya Fitzgerald, a team leader in customer service. They are assessed by Isabella, the workplace assessor, against appropriate competency standards from the Entertainment Industry Training Package. The CD-ROM is designed to be used with the video and contains information and activities that expand on issues raised in the video. The CD explores how LLN can affect assessment and the responsibilities of an assessor regarding LLN. The CD further investigates how to identify the candidate's LLN capabilities.
Workbook
The workbook is intended to be used with the CD and video and contains a hard copy of exercises and learning activities for the learner to complete. The first part of the booklet relates to the three case studies and explores the role of Isabella, the workplace assessor. The second part of the booklet contains additional learning activities with suggested strategies that are designed to help assessors to deal more effectively with the many LLN issues that can arise during an assessment process.

Five Good Reasons
Making the Case for Core Skill Development and Improving Workforce Quality and Productivity
This material shows employers how they can identify the need for and make a case for the delivery of core skill training of staff. This resource has been developed by the Industry Skills Council Workplace Communication Network and funded under the Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) program of the Australian Government through the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.
Core skills – reading, writing, speaking and listening, along with understanding and using numbers effectively (numeracy) – are linked to many work activities, particularly learning and communicating.
In fast-moving, technological societies like Australia, these skills are becoming increasingly complex.
Employers, managers and trainers often understand the impact of core skills on workforce safety, compliance and productivity, but it can still be difficult to make a convincing case for your organisation to invest in training or procedural reviews that will improve worker core skills.
This resource provides five good reasons that you can use when making your case for core skill training:
1. Efficiency = quality and productivity
2. Clear messages = achieving key objectives
3. Understanding learners’ core skills = effective training
4. Learning culture = innovation
5. Understanding roles = compliance and quality
The resource will also help you focus on what can be done in the workplace to make sure you have the processes in place to help workers with language, literacy and numeracy issues to achieve their potential, remain safe, and meet your compliance and productivity targets.
The information in this resource, in combination with your broader consideration of workforce development needs, can also help you develop an integrated approach to dealing with language, literacy and numeracy (core skills) in a workforce development plan.
