ASIC's Money Management resource

he Australian Securities and Investment Commission has published a range of educational and money management resources for humanitarian entrants to Australia.

The money management content will equip Literacy Practitioners with a valuable set of teaching resources that will assist in the learning needs of clients. The resources cater for different learning and literacy levels and cover topics including, household budgets, banking, paying bills, saving money, contracts, credit, types of credit debt working in Australia and insurance.

Get set to work with the GST: a literacy and numeracy resource

This book is designed to help people who need to develop literacy and numeracy skills to work with the Goods and Services Tax (GST). It provides practice exercises and answers and uses examples from four different fields: retail, automotive sales, service and repair, hospitality, and asset maintenance, and addresses units of competency in the training packages relating to these industries. The book is divided into three parts:

  • The jobs in the GST
  • The maths in the GST

It provides worksheets, workplace documents, worked examples of how to calculate GST and an introduction to terminology used in the GST. The resource is likely to be useful to anyone struggling to understand the GST and needing to use it to operate their business.

Peer tutor 3 numeracy activity tool kit

This video contains essential information and learning strategies directed at improving numeracy. The techniques for becoming a peer tutor are demonstrated. Four profiles are offered: lawn-mowing business, making a poster, in the park and travel. Within these profiles tutors can see how topics such as estimation, time, budgeting, measuring, sorting, volume and map work can be applied to everyday practical situations.

Note: this is only one of a set of resources. Peer tutor toolkits 1 and 2 focussing on literacy are also available.
