Applications for the 2012 Australian Training Awards National Focus categories are NOW OPEN.

The 2012 Australian Training Awards National Focus categories are:

Australian Apprenticeships - Employer Award

The Australian Apprenticeships - Employer Award recognises those employers who have made innovative improvements in training apprentices and/or trainees in Australia and have improved their outcomes through programs that address one or more of the following:

  • improving retention and completion rates of Australian Apprentices;
  • fast tracking training and skills acquisition through credit transfer and/or competency based training;
  • lifting foundation skills levels; and/or
  • increasing productivity by better use of knowledge or technology.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the Conditions of Entry requirements and be an employer of an Australian Apprentice (includes apprentices and trainees) at some time between 1 January 2011 and 30 April 2012. Statements addressing the selection criteria for this category must be written with particular focus on the employment of apprentices and/or trainees.

Applications will be judged using the evidence provided in statements addressing selection criteria part 1 and part 2 as described below. Your application should be based on evidence of performance or achievement of your Australian Apprentice/s. Sources of evidence may include (but is not limited to) the following supporting documents:

  • satisfaction surveys 
  • performance against individual, state, national and international benchmarks.

  • Creating stronger individual capabilities in foundations skills (language, numeracy and literacy) to enable increased workplace participation.

  • Adopting flexible and modern arrangements that lead to mutually beneficial outcomes in Australian workplaces and for the economy.

Community Pathways to VET Award

The Community Pathways to VET Award recognises community-based, not-for-profit organisations that demonstrate excellence and/or innovation in delivering pre-vocational education and training1 to their local community.

The award acknowledges the importance of an integrated system of quality training that offers multiple pathways to vocational education and training (VET), particularly for hard-to-reach learners.

1 Pre-vocational education and training is designed to prepare people for vocational education and training or work, and includes bridging courses, basic literacy and numeracy training, or training in job skills.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the Conditions of Entry requirements. They may be either individual organisations or a partnership of organisations, provided at least one partner meets the following criteria:

  • is a community education or training organisation whose core business includes offering adult learning in local community settings
  • is incorporated under Australian Government or state/territory government legislation as a ‘not for profit’ organisation
  • is not a publicly funded TAFE institute.

Only one application will be accepted for collaborative programs. Therefore, joint submissions are encouraged.

Criterion 6: Expanding the availability, access and uptake of quality training pathways for the local community – for example, improved pathways that enable disengaged adults to move into further education and training or suitable employment (limit 2500 characters)

School Pathways to VET Award

The School Pathways to VET Award recognises eligible organisations including schools, Registered Training Organisations, industry bodies, employers that have collaboratively delivered (an) excellent vocational education and training (VET) program to secondary school students, and can demonstrate local impact on each of the following:

  • secondary school students accessing vocational education and training programs
  • meeting student needs, labour market and industry skill requirements 
  • achieving excellent outcomes for students
  • maintaining or establishing community partnerships and collaborative enterprise
  • innovation in the structure, content and delivery of programs.

Eligibility

Applications must meet the Conditions of Entry requirements and:

  • have delivered the training programs to secondary school students within the past two years and
  • be based on training packages that lead to qualifications or statements of attainment under the Australian Qualifications Framework.

One application will be accepted for collaborative programs. Therefore, joint applications are encouraged.

Skills for Sustainability - Educational Institution Award

The Skills for Sustainability – Educational Institution Award recognises a Registered Training Organisation that demonstrates outstanding achievement in embedding sustainability principles through their programs, products and work practices in the provision of nationally recognised training.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the Conditions of Entry requirements and be a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) delivering nationally recognised training.

The Leadership in Quality Award recognises eligible individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership promoting and advancing quality to achieve positive outcomes in the vocational education and training (VET) sector.

Section C: Selection Criteria Part 1

This information will be considered and used for short listing and judging purposes.

When writing the selection criteria please take into account the considerations outlined below. These
considerations are NOT additional criteria, but are provided to clarify what to include in addressing
the selection criteria.

Criterion 1: Partnerships (limit 1500 characters)
Consider:

  • Who has been involved with your career? Who has assisted promoting and advancing quality, both internally and externally
  • The extent of participation of these partners

Criterion 2: Process (limit 1500 characters)
Consider:

  • Do the processes used to promote quality align with national standards
  • How these processes make quality training a fundamental part of the organisation which you lead
  • The unique elements of the processes

Criterion 3: Promotion (limit 1500 characters)
Consider:

  • How quality training is promoted, both internally and externally
  • How you use technology to link with targeted communities  
  • How your communication plan helps to promote quality

Criterion 4: Peer recognition/duplication (limit 1500 characters)
Consider:

  • Have the training systems lead by you been evaluated by an independent, recognised expert
  • How you review the effectiveness of the training systems
  • Have the training systems been fully integrated throughout the organisations which you lead

Criterion 5: Performance outcomes (limit 1500 characters)
Consider:

  • The impact that your leadership has had on the organisations and the community

Section D: Selection Criteria Part 2

This information will be considered and used for short listing and judging purposes.

In this section you should explain how the applicant has demonstrated outstanding leadership promoting and advancing quality and is achieving positive outcomes in the VET sector through each of the following:

Criterion 1: Addressing completion and retention rate concerns (limit 2500 characters)
Consider:

  • The impact the leader has had on growth or retention in work or training
  • The impact the leader has had on training quality both locally and nationally

Criterion 2: Supporting high quality skill development in individuals (limit 2500 characters)
Consider:

  • Examples of how the leader supports high quality skill development

Criterion 3: Integrating projects to draw together relevant organisations (limit 2500 characters) 
Consider:

  • How the leader has successfully integrated projects that draw together relevant organisations

Criterion 4: Creating stronger client (i.e. students/stakeholders/community etc) and VET capabilities by        examples of evidence based approaches (limit 2500 characters)
Consider:

  • Examples of successful approaches that demonstrate increased client or VET capabilities

Criterion 5: Providing clients (i.e. students/stakeholders/community etc) with robust and high quality information so they can make an informed choice when choosing an education provider or VET pathway (limit 2500 characters)
Consider:

  • How the leader ensures the provision of information which is both accessible and high quality and available in electronic and hard copy formats

Criterion 6: Providing clients (i.e. students/stakeholders/community etc) access to a range of services and support that help them to overcome barriers, develop new skills and knowledge
(limit 2500 characters)
Consider:

  • How the leader ensures that the training system builds upon the knowledge of the community. In particular groups who may be marginalised in some way

Criterion 7: Fostering and valuing the contributions that diversity brings to the workplace
(limit 2500 characters)
Consider:

  • How the leader has sought out and promoted diversity in program design, delivery, evaluation and promotion

Section E: Declaration

Section F: Save & Submit

The 'Save to my computer' button in this section of the application form, allows you to save a draft copy of your application to your local computer so you can access the application without being connected to the Internet.

If you currently use an email application such as Outlook, Eudora or Mail the ‘Submit to DEEWR’ button will automatically generate an email to DEEWR with your application form attached.

If you use an Internet mail service, such as Yahoo or Hotmail, you will need to save your form and manually attach it to an email addressed to NationalFocuscategories@deewr.gov.au.

DEEWR will acknowledge receipt of your application form by email (within four working days).
