Schools Assistance Act 2008
An Act to grant financial assistance for non-government primary and secondary education for 2009 to 2012
*Please note that the Schools Assistance Amendment (Financial Assistance) Act 2011 received Royal Assent on 21 April 2011. The amendment Act amends the Schools Assistance Act 2008 to extend the existing funding arrangements, including indexation arrangements until the end of 2013 and for Grants for Capital Expenditure until the end of 2014.
Funding provided for under the Schools Assistance Act 2008 includes, amongst other elements:
- Grants for Recurrent expenditure including
- Remoteness Loading
- Indigenous Supplementary Assistance (ISA)
- Indigenous Funding Guarantee (IFG)
- Grants for Capital expenditure
- Grants for Targeted expenditure including
- Short Term Emergency Assistance
- Education in Country Areas
- Languages Education
- Teaching English to new arrivals
- Literacy, Numeracy and Special Learning Needs

Schools Assistance Regulations 2009
The Schools Assistance Regulations 2009 (the Regulations) specify the performance and transparency requirements under the Schools Assistance Act 2008 for non-government schools.
The Regulations give effect to the data collection and reporting requirements in the National Education Agreement including the national assessments and performance measures set out in the MCEECDYA Measurement Framework for National Key Performance Measures. The Regulations specify:
- National student assessments
- National reports on the outcomes of schooling
- Individual school information
- Student reports to parents
- Publication of information by schools
- Supplementation of funding for recurrent, capital and targeted expenditure for the applicable program year

The Administrative Guidelines: Commonwealth Programs for Non-Government Schools (the Guidelines) provide an overview of the funding arrangements for non-government schools and details about key aspects of the new performance and accountability framework.
