Government schools
The Commonwealth Government provides funding to the states and territories to support improved service delivery and reforms in Australian schools. Funding for government schools is provided to the states and territories under the National Education Agreement (NEA) agreed by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) in 2008.
The NEA forms part of the Intergovernmental Agreement on Federal Financial Relations—the overarching framework for the Commonwealth Government’s financial relations with the states and territories. Under the NEA, state and territory governments are responsible for developing policy, delivering services, monitoring and reviewing performance of individual schools and regulating schools.
The contribution of all governments towards achieving the outcomes and performance benchmarks agreed in the NEA will be assessed by the independent COAG Reform Council and reported publicly on an annual basis.
