Teach Next Intake 1 (June 2012)
Applications for the Teach Next program will be assessed by a selection panel, based on academic qualifications, relevant work experience, aptitude for teaching and suitability for an employment-based teaching course. Successful applicants will be notified in May 2012.
Participants will be required to attend a six week initial intensive training course during June/July 2012. This residential course will be delivered by Deakin University at their Geelong campus. It is anticipated that participants will attend three further intensive blocks of study during school holidays (approximately every six months) over the two-year training period.
Teach Next Intake 1 will see participants placed in schools in Western Australia and the ACT. Participants will be provided with a mentoring teacher for their two-year placement. During this time, participants will take on teaching responsibilities within the school, on a reduced teaching load of 0.8 FTE, and continue their studies through Deakin University. At the successful completion of the two-year Teach Next program, participants will receive a Postgraduate Diploma of Teaching and be eligible to apply for advertised teaching vacancies in their preferred state or territory.

What is Teach Next?
Teach Next was announced in the 2011-12 Federal Budget as part of the Australian Government’s commitment to make every school a great school. The $15.9 million initiative will establish a new employment-based pathway into teaching for up to 395 skilled and experienced professionals who are seeking a career change into the teaching profession.
Teach Next builds on the reforms being implemented through the Smarter Schools National Partnership for Improving Teacher Quality, which aims to improve teacher quality and raise the status of the teaching profession.
Teach Next will play an important role in addressing areas of teacher shortages in regional and hard-to-staff schools and in reducing the number of teachers currently teaching outside their subject areas.
Teachers from other career backgrounds are considered a valuable source of new entrants to teaching and will help reinvigorate teaching practice of subjects such as maths and science by combining theory with real world application and experience.
This will help deliver improved educational outcomes in schools, particularly in areas of teacher shortages such as mathematics and science.
