Schools Disability Advisory Council

On 6 September 2011, The Hon Peter Garrett AM MP, Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth announced the establishment of the Schools Disability Advisory Council.

The Council held its Inaugural Meeting on 14 February 2012. A second meeting was held on 12 April 2012.

The Council will provide an important step in improving the educational outcomes, social inclusion, resilience and wellbeing of school aged students with disability, through the provision of collaborative informed advice and information to Government in relation to school education programs and initiatives.

Terms of Reference of the Council

  1. Provide advice to the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations on policy development and implementation in relation to school education programs and initiatives that aim to improve the educational outcomes, social inclusion and wellbeing of school-aged children and young people with disability.
  2. Provide an opportunity for Council members to share information and perspectives on key Government priorities for educating students with disability.
  3. Facilitate consultation between the Australian Government, Council members and their organisations, including: students with disability; their families and carers; and, education and disability stakeholders to inform future policy development.
