National reading day

National Reading Day was held on Wednesday 2 September 2009.

National Reading Day is a key event during National Literacy and Numeracy Week.  It provides an opportunity for all Australian school children to be involved in a national reading based activity.

This year's theme for National Literacy and Numeracy Week is Getting the Basics Right.  A good start is to encourage students to develop a love of books and share the joy of reading.

The Australian Literacy Educators Association (ALEA) and the Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE) have developed a range of activities designed to promote reading and the development of students’ reading and literacy skills for National Reading Day. These activities are available on the National Reading Day website.

The Story Sharing Safari

National Reading Day follows the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week which was held on 22 - 28 August under the theme Book Safari. National Reading Day provides opportunities for schools to extend and further develop activities begun during Book Week. These reading activities culminated on National Reading Day when schools were invited to go on a Story Sharing Safari.  Schools that had registered to participate were in the running to win great prizes. Visit the National Activities for Schools website to see if your school was successful!

The National Reading Day website provides ideas and support for ways of sharing children’s work within the school and the wider community through websites, podcasts, e-books and more traditional media.  There are also links to authors and the recommended books for 2009.
