The Education Tax Refund

The Education Tax Refund allows eligible parents, guardians and independent students to claim 50% of their eligible education expenses up to:

  • $750 for each eligible child in primary school  (a maximum refund of $375), and
  • $1500 for each eligible child in secondary school (a maximum refund of $750).

To be eligible for the Education Tax Refund you:

  • must be entitled to Family Tax Benefit Part A for any child undertaking primary or secondary school studies whose education expenses you wish to claim, or
  • do not receive Family Tax Benefit Part A for your child undertaking primary or secondary school studies because your child receives Youth Allowance, Disability Support Pension, ABSTUDY Living Allowance, or a payment under the Veterans' Children Education Scheme, Student Financial Supplement Scheme, or the scheme to provide education and training under s258 of the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004, or
  • are an eligible independent student.

Eligible items include: laptops, home computers, home internet connection, printers and paper, education software, school text books and prescribed trade tools. School fees and uniforms are not eligible items.
