2009 NAPLAN results

On 11 September 2009, the Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs (MCEECDYA) released the first set of summary results from the 2009 National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

This is the second year of testing using the NAPLAN tests, which ushered in a new era in reporting student performance to parents. NAPLAN measures all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 using common tests nationwide. Student performance can also be shown on a single scale that continues from year 3 to year 9, which will enable parents to see their child’s progress over time.

The summary results show that more than 90 per cent of Australian students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are performing at or above the national minimum standard in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numerary.

To supplement the release of national data, from 14 September over one million school students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will receive their individual reports showing their performance in this year’s national assessments of essential literacy and numeracy skills.

Parents receive a Student Report which outlines their child’s performance on an achievement scale, from Band 1 to Band 10. These scales clearly identify the national average for the year level, and in a number of states, the scale also shows the school average for the grade and subject.

Before the start of the next school year, the new Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) will publish school profiles online for the first time.

The 2009 NAPLAN Summary report is available at the NAPLAN website.

For more information about the publishing of school profiles online, visit ACARA.

The Principles and Protocols for Reporting on Schooling in Australia are also available on the MCEECDYA website.
