Celebrate Literacy and Numeracy

Celebrate Literacy and Numeracy

The fundamental building blocks of literacy and numeracy are being celebrated across Australia during National Literacy and Numeracy Week between 29 August and 4 September 2010.

The week, now in its twelfth year, recognises locally the achievements of students and the efforts of teachers, parents and communities in supporting young people to develop stronger literacy and numeracy skills.

This year’s theme, Learning for Living, further strengthens the link between literacy and numeracy and the life skills necessary for everyday living. These life skills are critical to overcoming educational disadvantage, particularly for Indigenous students.

Initiated in 1999, National Literacy and Numeracy Week began as National Literacy Week and targeted primary schools. It has since extended to secondary schools and a numeracy element was added in 2001.

National Literacy and Numeracy Week is supported by National Numeracy Ambassador Simon Pampena, and National Literacy Ambassador Deborah Abela.

There are many activities leading up to and taking place during National Literacy and Numeracy Week. When students participate in the National Celebration of Literacy and the Reach for the Stars activities they will be joining thousands of school communities in every state and territory, using literacy and numeracy skills to learn and have fun.
