Job Ready Certificate Discussion Paper

The Department engaged a consultant, Professor Richard Sweet, in late 2008 to develop a discussion paper and assist with stakeholder consultations early in 2009.

Three sets of issues are discussed in the paper:

  • what should be assessed and how;
  • the certificate itself – what it might look like and who might award it; and
  • possible development and implementation.

Stakeholder Consultations and Feedback

Representatives from key stakeholder organisations, including state training authorities, employers, school principals and unions, attended consultations held throughout Australia in February/March 2009. Stakeholders were also encouraged to provide their feedback on the key questions identified in the discussion paper.

A report was prepared for the Department, informed by the national consultations and stakeholder feedback.

Next steps

The Department is currently considering:

  • how to support the development of employability skills in young people;
  • how best to assess employability skills and the associated attributes such as punctuality; and
  • how best to report on young people’s employability skills in a way that is meaningful to them and to their potential employers.
