Investing in TAFE to support jobs today and jobs tomorrow

Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, today announced that the Rudd Government will invest $200 million in the delivery of Better TAFE Facilities to support the jobs of today and the jobs of tomorrow.

60 TAFE institutes across Australia will receive grants of between $2 million and $8 million to upgrade and improve education and training infrastructure and support local jobs.

As part of the Education Revolution, the Rudd Government’s $200 million Better TAFE Facilities program will modernise teaching and learning environments right across the vocational education and training sector.

The Rudd Government is investing in education and training to ensure Australians have the skills they need to participate in the workforce when the economy begins to recover.

  • In NSW, 10 TAFEs over 129 campuses will receive more than $63 million
  • In Victoria, 18 TAFEs over 23 campuses will receive almost $49 million
  • In Queensland, 13 TAFEs over 43 campuses will receive more than $39 million
  • In Western Australia, 11 TAFEs over 48 campuses will receive $22 million
  •  In South Australia, 3 TAFEs over 24 campuses will receive more than $14 million
  • In Tasmania, 2 TAFEs over 15 campuses will receive almost $5 million
  •  In the Northern Territory, 2 TAFEs over 6 campuses will receive $4 million
  • In the ACT, the Canberra Institute of Technology operating over 6 campuses will receive more than $3 million

The Better TAFE Facilities initiative is part of the Rudd Government’s $500 million Teaching and Learning Capital Fund for Vocational Education and Training. High quality vocational training at this time of global recession is vital to improving the prospects of jobseekers and the competitiveness of Australian businesses.

Under Better TAFE Facilities, all TAFE institutes across Australia are eligible to receive a grant of between $2 million and $8 million to undertake maintenance needs, small capital works and equipment and plant purchase.

The Government announced the Teaching and Learning Capital Fund for Vocational Education and Training last December as part of a $4.7 billion nation-building infrastructure package to support Australia’s economy.
