Indigenous Remote Service Delivery Traineeships

Indigenous Remote Service Delivery Traineeships

Indigenous Remote Service Delivery Traineeships

The Australian Government, through the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), is investing almost $23 million in the new Indigenous Remote Service Delivery Traineeships for schools and child care services.

The traineeships have been developed in recognition of the significant barriers to employment and training experienced by young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in remote communities.

From July 2010 to June 2013, trainees aged between 15 and 24 will be placed in eligible schools and Indigenous child care services in remote areas around the country.

The traineeships combine practical work with structured training to give participants a nationally recognised qualification and the work experience they need to access employment opportunities in their communities. Traineeships also focus on participants gaining qualifications up to an appropriate level to enter higher skilled positions in government service delivery.

The traineeships contribute to the Council of Australian Governments’ Closing the Gap commitments to:

  • halve the employment gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians within a decade;
  • ensure that all Indigenous four years olds in remote communities have access to early childhood education within five years.

Group Training Organisations have been engaged to deliver the traineeships. See below for details of these organisations.

Traineeships in Schools

Schools in Remote Service Delivery locations (Queensland, Northern Territory, South Australia, Western Australia and New South Wales) and non-government schools in remote areas are eligible to host a trainee.

Trainees can fulfil any role required by the school, but the majority are in education support, administration and grounds-keeping. Qualifications can be at the Certificate I+II, II, III or IV or Diploma level.

Traineeships in Indigenous Child Care Services

Traineeships in child care services are targeted at centre-based Indigenous funded child care services in Remote Service Delivery locations and Children and Family locations in the Northern Territory, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia.

Traineeships are in essential child care roles only. Qualifications in children’s services can be at the Certificate III or IV or Diploma level.
