National practitioner’s forum

The Closing the Gap—Expansion of intensive literacy and numeracy programs Practitioner’s Forum 2011 was held in Canberra on 23 May 2011.

Minister Garrett opened the successful Practitioner’s Forum which focussed on the key reform areas of:

  • community engagement and cultural understanding,
  • effective and evidence-based teaching of literacy and numeracy,
  • strong school leadership, and
  • whole school engagement with literacy and numeracy.

Many of the projects aim to impact positively on Indigenous attendance at school with collaborative actions designed to improve the relationship between Indigenous communities and schools.

The Forum provided a valuable networking opportunity for education practitioners who are directly involved in innovative practices to improve educational outcomes for Indigenous students.

Approximately 90 people attended the Forum which comprised of teachers, school leaders, Indigenous education workers, research partners, and education authority staff and project managers.
