Indigenous Youth Leadership Program

The Indigenous Youth Leadership Program (IYLP) is helping to close the gaps in Indigenous educational disadvantage through creating greater access to additional education choice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, particularly those from remote and very remote areas of the country.

The IYLP supports a number of Indigenous students to attend high performing secondary schools (government and non government, day and boarding) and/or universities to complete Year 12 and/or an undergraduate degree.

Secondary school scholarships worth up to $16,250 per annum per student (in 2010 prices) are available subject to eligibility and selection. The funds are in addition to any ABSTUDY entitlements and contribute towards the costs for: school fees and tuition; boarding and accommodation costs (not already funded through other programs); and practical leadership experiences.

Depending on the individual circumstances of the student, these funds may also be used towards other educational costs such as uniforms, textbooks, IT requirements, orientation, study tours, excursions, tutors, mentors and counsellors.

Tertiary scholarships provide a contribution of $6,000 per annum towards the costs of university and an additional up to $1,250 supports each student’s leadership development (in 2010 prices).

In addition to helping Indigenous students achieve their educational aspirations, the IYLP contributes to the development of a pool of positive role models and future leaders, to inspire other Indigenous students and illustrate the successes that can be achieved through educational attainment.

The Indigenous Youth Leadership Program Quality Framework is currently being amended and will be reposted shortly.

DEEWR has published the Indigenous Youth Leadership Program Quality Framework so that the purpose of the program is clear and that best practice can be identified and applied consistently across the program. This  Quality Framework provides clear information to parents, communities, participating schools and the scholarship recipients about what to they can expect from their participation in the Program.
