Queensland Natural Disasters Jobs and Skills Package – Support for Indigenous Australians
The Australian Government in partnership with the Queensland Government has announced $83 million in funding for the Queensland Natural Disasters Jobs and Skills Package.
The package has been developed to support Queensland industry, business and communities affected by recent floods and Cyclone Yasi in early 2011. It comprises skills and employment initiatives to mitigate skills and job losses, support the retention of skilled workers in impacted communities, and address emerging skills shortages stemming from the flood crisis.
To ensure that Indigenous Australians are supported, and benefit from the opportunities available in recovery, the Australian Government will invest over $3.5 million in training and employment initiatives. This includes specific funding for Indigenous Employment Program projects, and for the employment of Indigenous Employment Coordinators.

The Indigenous Employment Coordinators are located across Queensland in regions affected by the floods and cyclone. These coordinators work to ensure that Indigenous Australians are able to connect with training and employment opportunities presented in each region. The Australian Government consulted with communities to identify the need and locations for these roles.
