Indigenous scholar: Jilda Simpson

Jilda Simpson is a proud Yuwaalarray / Gamilaraay woman from Sydney who had a dream of undertaking a PhD in museum studies to share with and empower Indigenous artists and designers in her Walgett, Lightning Ridge and Sydney communities.

As an Indigenous Staff Scholarship winner in 2010, Jilda’s decision to study a PHD is now less of a financial worry. The Indigenous Staff Scholarship provides professional development opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander scholars to improve their education outcomes.

Many students are often required to make great personal and financial sacrifices so they can complete qualifications that will help advance their personal and career goals. An Indigenous Staff Scholarship eases the pressure by providing financial assistance for tuition fees as well as a living allowance.

Jilda thinks this is really worthwhile. “This scholarship allowed me to relocate to Canberra for my PHD and helped me to set up my research project, supervision relationships and networks which have all been invaluable to my project.”

The Indigenous Staff Scholarship seeks applicants for its scholarships who are working at a university and actively encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to complete their qualifications. Successful applicants can take 12 months leave from their job to study full-time in their chosen field.

“I was very fortunate to receive an Indigenous Staff Scholarship to undertake one year of study for my research in museum studies at the Australian National University.”

“I have been lucky to have both the security of my job at the University of New South Wales and a full year to establish PHD studies. I could not have wished for a better, more supportive continuation of my education; the experiences I have had and the people I have met, have ensured that the dedicated year of full-time studies that the scholarship offers, has been well worth it."

Jilda has this advice to anyone thinking of applying for the Indigenous Staff Scholarship – “Go for it, I’d highly recommend it. I have been inspired by both staff and students to continue my education journey and have shared many positive education experiences with them. One of the biggest rewards is seeing Indigenous students graduate after all their years of dedicated effort at university.”
