The Indigenous Education Statement (IES) is one of a number of sources of information that enable DEEWR to meet its ongoing responsibilities for Indigenous higher education. These responsibilities include assessing and reporting on progress towards improved educational outcomes for Indigenous Australians as defined in the goals of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Policy (AEP), and gauging the effectiveness of DEEWR programs aimed at supporting providers to achieve improved outcomes.
Content
The statement provides DEEWR with annual information on the provider’s:
- Objectives to improve higher education outcomes for Indigenous Australians
- Policies, strategies and activities in relation to the goals of the AEP
- Constraints that impact on ability to achieve each goal
- Plans for future improvement against each goal.
The statements also present information required for funding under the Indigenous Support Program, including:
- Conditions of eligibility
- Report of expenditure.
The 2011 IES
Following amendments to the Guidelines for Other Grants under the Higher Education Support Act 2003, the 2011 IES:
- Must include a report on the expenditure of the 2010 Indigenous Support Program grant, with information on the amount of the grant going to the provider’s Indigenous education unit where one exists
- May supply the information required in relation to eligibility for Indigenous Support Program funding for 2010. Should a provider not be in a position to include this information in the 2011 statement, DEEWR would follow up the matter separately in the second half 2011.

Included in the documentation each year is a list of DEEWR’s particular interests in understanding progress towards achieving the AEP goals.
The 2011 statements are due to be presented to DEEWR in the required format by 31 May 2011.
