Indigenous Education Targeted Assistance Act

The Indigenous Education (Targeted Assistance) Act 2000 provides the legislative basis and appropriates funding for a variety of Indigenous education programs for the Tertiary sector.

The Indigenous Education and Training programs administered by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations are built upon the foundation of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Policy (AEP).  The Australian Government, along with all State and Territory governments, endorses and promotes the 21 common and agreed National Goals of the AEP.

The 21 goals of the AEP form the basis of the Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA) eight priority areas for Indigenous education and training.
