I applied for the program initially as I saw it as an ideal opportunity to join the Australian Public Service, with the added bonus of the Contract Management training component.  The other factor was the prospect of being able to meet and interact with the other participants in the program from all over Australia, who are also learning and experiencing life in the Public Service.

From day one of the program I had heaps of help and support from the program coordinator, my work colleagues and other program participants, and this definitely helped me in successfully completing the program.

Since completing the program in 2005, I have worked in the department’s Darwin regional office, in Indigenous employment, and in 2006 I moved to Canberra to take up a position in Human Resources, working in Indigenous programs, Learning and Development, and currently I’m in the department’s Pay and Conditions team.

Moving to Canberra was a big step but this has given me the chance to work in different areas and build skills that are applicable, both in my department and across the Australian Public Service.  The opportunity for career progression is amazing.

I would encourage all Indigenous people out there to apply for the program, to challenge themselves, and be involved in something that will lead to a fulfilling career in the Australian Public Service.  There will be all the help and support you need and a chance to work and learn at the same time.
