Clinton Tolland
Budget Officer, Finance Group 2006 Participant
Hi, my name is Clinton Tolland. I’m originally from Townsville but spent some of my time growing up in Woorabinda and Palm Island.
I commenced and completed the then named Diploma of Government and Contract Management in 2006, and graduation ceremony followed in 2007. |

What first attracted me to this program, well firstly my situation was a bit different to others because I just graduated from University with a Bachelor Degree. As a result I had several avenues open to me for entry into the Government, but after careful consideration I decided to enter Government through this program. It gave me an opportunity to specialise in a specific area, Contract Management, and luckily enough I was able to continue working on Indigenous specific programs, helping Indigenous people.
I commenced the program through DEST (Now known as DEEWR). This I found to be quite a rewarding experience on several fronts. Firstly, there was a wealth of experience and knowledge of Contract Management in the Branch, and as a result I was able to tap into and draw upon those resources when I needed help.
Secondly, and this made me particularly proud, was the fact that the resources i.e. knowledge and skill, came from my colleagues of which the vast majority were Indigenous.
During the program, I gained a great deal of experience, knowledge and skill in Contract Program Management, specifically in the area of Administered Programs. In view of that, I can honestly say that the expertise I acquired during my time in the program has definitely opened doors for me, having changed departments to work in other program areas on several occasions.
If you’re thinking of giving the program a go, then by all means go for it. I’ve had nothing but good or great experiences working in Government through the program, so for me it’s been a rewarding and motivating experience and I can honestly say I made the right choice.
