Applying for the IAGDP

Applying for the IAGDP

Applications for the 2010 IAGDP have now closed. Candidates who have submitted an application can expect to be notified of their success in progressing to the second stage of the assessment process by the end of February 2010. Thank you for your interest in the program.

To be successful in gaining a position on the IAGDP, you will be required to undergo a selection process comprising the following three stages:

Written Application

The first step in being considered for the IAGDP is to submit a written application.  This is designed to not only identify whether you possess the capacity to successfully complete the program, but is also used to compare candidates in order to determine who to invite to the next stage of the selection process.

In addition to serving as a measure of your writing skills, the written application is an opportunity for you to provide us with details about:

  • How your existing skills and experience will contribute to you being successful on the program
  • Why you are applying for the program, and how this will assist you to achieve your career aspirations
  • Referees who can confirm the information contained within your application is correct and answer any questions we might have about your suitability to undertake the program.

In responding to the questions based on the selection criteria within the application, you are encouraged to use examples you would feel comfortable providing additional details about at a later stage.  Remember, the information you provide within your application is typically all that the assessing panel knows about you when making their decision.

DEEWR’s preference is to receive applications for the program via its online recruitment system, eRecruit.  This system enables us to not only track and assess applications as they are submitted, but also helps us to better manage your recruitment experience by keeping you up-to-date with any program changes, such as new partnering agencies and/or vacancy locations.

We recognise, however, that there are circumstances which may prevent some candidates from utilising our online system to submit their applications.  If this applies to you, applications can be submitted either via:

 Email:  iagdp@deewr.gov.au

 Post:  IAGDP Coordinator
GPO Box 9880
CANBERRA  ACT  2601
Location Code – C16MT2

Please note that in order to provide equitable access to all parties involved in the assessment process, all applications for the IAGDP received via email or post will be manually entered into eRecruit.

To apply for the IAGDP using eRecruit from 3 December 2009, visit the DEEWR Jobs page.

Assessment Centre

If you are selected to progress to the second stage of the assessment process, you will receive an invitation to an Assessment Centre.  This will involve you attending the office of a partnering agency at an agreed time to undergo a series of activities over the course of approximately two hours.

If you wish, you may bring a support person with you to the Assessment Centre.  The role of the support person is not to speak on your behalf, or assist you to complete the assessment activities, but rather to help you to relax and feel at ease on the day.

Welcome Session

Upon your arrival at the Assessment Centre, you will be greeted by a representative of a partnering agency who will explain what the day involves and answer any questions you may have.  You are likely to be asked to confirm your agency, location and field of study preferences at this stage as these may have changed since submitting your application.

During this session, in order to speed up the finalisation of the selection process, you will also be asked to complete some forms, submit referee reports and provide certain documents which will be copied and returned to you.  Details of what you will need to bring with you will be outlined within the Assessment Centre invitation.

Wherever possible, this session will be conducted by a previous program participant who will also be able to share their experiences with you.

Interview

Whilst often considered to be the most daunting aspect of any selection process, the interview is really just an opportunity for you to further your claims to participate on the program in person.  An interview involves a discussion with a panel, typically consisting of three people, who will ask you a number of questions to help determine your suitability for the program.

If you do have a support person with you, they are welcome to sit in on the interview as long as their presence does not disrupt the process.

Written Exercise

This activity is designed to assess your capacity to utilise technology and to clarify which of the fields of study on offer is most appropriate for you.  It will involve you following instructions to access information on a computer, answering a series of multiple choice questions and writing a brief statement about one of three possible issues.

This will be a timed activity which you will be required to compete by yourself.  Any special requirements you may have in relation to completing this exercise will be accommodated appropriately.
