Abstract

Over the past two years, the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) has been working closely with the higher education sector to improve the quality, comprehensiveness and detail of the data available on demand for higher education. This process has led to the development of a new national unit record data collection which is the basis of this report.

This report includes statistics on:

  • Number of applicants
  • Number of offers made
  • Number of offers accepted
  • Level of unmet demand
  • Analysis of trends in key fields identified as areas of skill shortage
  • A review of offer and acceptance rates on key applicant demographics
  • Analysis of applications, offers and acceptances for under-represented groups, and
  • Information on factors affecting current and future demand.

From 2010, the report will also include information on direct applicants to university.

This corrigendum has been issued on October 1st 2009 to acknowledge updates to data presented in the Undergraduate Applications, Offers and Acceptances, 2009 report. Previously this report calculated the socio-economic status of applicants by splitting the 15-64 year old population in each State into quartiles based on the SEIFA ranking of postcodes. The updated data now splits the 15-64 year old population into quartiles at the national level. While this has implications for smaller State data such as Tasmania, the update does not substantially affect the overall picture nor the conclusions of the report which remain largely the same.
