Complaints against Australian universities

Australian universities are autonomous institutions, established under Commonwealth, State and Territory legislation. As such, the Australian Government is unable to intervene in the internal processes of universities, including individual student complaints.

All Australian universities are required to have formal grievance procedures in place to deal with complaints. If all lines of formal complaint with the university have been exhausted, you may wish to consider contacting the relevant Ombudsman. The Ombudsman can investigate complaints against publicly funded institutions, including universities.

In addition to contacting the relevant State or Territory Ombudsman, international students also have the option of contacting the Overseas Students Ombudsman (OSO). The OSO investigates complaints about problems international students have with private education and training in Australia.
