The Australian Learning and Teaching Council

The Australian Learning and Teaching Council

In early 2011, the Australian Government announced its intention to cease funding the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC). This was one of a number of difficult decisions that the Government was required to make to find the necessary budget savings to fund rebuilding after the floods

From 1 January 2012, the awards and grants functions of the ALTC will be administered by DEEWR, in a new unit based in the DEEWR Sydney office. To assist in the transition, the Government has announced the appointment of a consultant Ms Alison Johns, to consider the role the sector will play when grant and award programs transfer to DEEWR.

This will include peer assessment arrangements and advisory structures, and whether there are opportunities for program design improvements and innovations in program delivery.

Ms Johns’ report will be made publicly available late in 2011, along with the key dates for 2012 grant and award applications and nominations. The Department will provide further information on activities in this area in the coming months.

The ALTC has now ceased its business as usual operations in preparation for its wind up at the end of the year.
