Clean Energy Initiative
The $5 billion Clean Energy Initiative (CEI) complements the Renewable Energy Target, by supporting the research, development and demonstration of low-emission energy technologies, including industrial scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) and solar energy. The CEI consists of the following components:
- CCS Flagships Program: funding to support construction and demonstration of large-scale integrated carbon capture and storage projects in Australia, which may include gasification, post-combustion capture, oxy-firing, transport and storage technologies.
- National Low Emissions Coal Initiative: funding which aims to accelerate the development and deployment of technologies that will reduce emissions from coal use.
- Solar Flagships Program: funding to support construction and demonstration of up to four large-scale, grid connected solar power stations in Australia.
- Australian Solar Institute (ASI): funding solar research and development, as well as fostering greater collaboration between researchers and industry and forging strong links with peak overseas research organisations.
- Australian Centre for Renewable Energy: promoting the development, commercialisation and deployment of renewable technologies, through a commercial investment approach.
- Renewable Energy Future Fund: supporting the development and deployment of large and small scale renewable energy projects and will enhance take up of industrial, commercial and residential energy efficiency.
More information is provided in the CEI Fact Sheet on the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism's website.
