New apprenticeship centre open

A new $75 million, purposed-built training centre has opened in Sydney, which will train apprentices in modern technologies.

On 17 May 2011, The Minister for Tertiary Education, Senator Chris Evans opened the state-of-the-art Ausgrid Learning Centre at Silverwater which combines the best of industry training with the best of sustainable design; with the building achieving a 6 Star Green Star environmental rating.

The Centre, funded under the Australian Government’s Education Investment Fund (EIF), will enable around 400 students to be trained in an area of critical skill shortage within the electricity supply industry.

Electrical Apprentices will have access to cutting edge technologies to ensure they receive the most up to date training in a safe and modern environment.

The Centre features a range of purpose built training facilities including a pole yard for heights training, a substation simulator and electric vehicle technologies.

The new building also includes an energy efficiency centre with interactive education facilities to educate builders, students and the general public about the benefits of green building.

The Learning Centre will continue to deliver skilled and qualified workforces in areas of need, such as the electricity supply industry.

The Australian Government has contributed $25 million towards the new Learning Centre under the Education Investment Fund.

The Gillard Government made a $3 billion investment in skills and training initiatives in this year’s budget.
