To assist providers who will be contracted under the new Employment Services Deed 2009-
12 (ESD4), DEEWR has contacted Telstra to request help in the setting up of new or changed
telephone and internet services. However, it should be noted that Job Services Australia
providers are free to use whichever telecommunications provider they choose.
As there are a number of issues that impact on such services, including the type of
internet/telephone setup, distance from telephone exchanges and available services locally, it
is not possible to generally predict how long installations and changes may take to complete. Each connection has to be examined on a case by case basis.
To maximise the likelihood that telecommunication services are set up by 1 July 2009, Telstra
has advised that you should contact them by no later than 1 May 2009. Telstra has provided
the following number to make initial contact: 1800 655 744. For organisations which already
have an existing business relationship with Telstra, you should contact your Telstra Account
Executive as soon as possible.
Telstra cannot guarantee that all providers who require access and who complete
agreements in a timely manner can be granted access within the normal timeframe of two to
three weeks. However, certain checks to determine technical availability can be made at the
time of initial discussions with the provider, and alternatives can be offered at that time. For
example, if ADSL is not available, wireless access may be required. Telstra cannot determine
local exchange situations at the point of sale.
If there are no technical issues, as is the case in most metropolitan areas, the usual
timeframe from date of provision of a completed application by a provider to full access will be
up to a month.
