National ECEC Workforce Census 2010 results

The National Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) Workforce Census 2010 data collection results are now available, including detailed tables at the state, territory and regional level.

The National ECEC Workforce Census shows 139,187 staff employed in the ECEC sector, with 48.8 per cent of workers engaged in long day care services, 18.3 per cent of staff in preschool services, 11.7 per cent engaged in outside schools hours care, 10.1 per cent in vacation care and 9.8 per cent of workers in family day care. Over two thirds of all staff hold an ECEC qualification, with one quarter of paid ECEC staff having ten or more years’ experience in the sector.

The National ECEC Workforce Census was conducted by the Australian Government in partnership with state and territory governments to better inform the approach used by governments and the early childhood sector to develop the ECEC workforce.

Given the high overall response rate from child care and preschool services, the results provide nationally consistent and comprehensive information on the early childhood workforce.

Once again, thank you to all preschool, kindergarten and child care services, as well as individual staff members, for participating in the National ECEC Workforce Census 2010. The results will help ensure that high quality early childhood services continue to be provided to young children in their significant, formative years.
