Information for Students
Students may be aware that some areas of Australia have experienced severe flooding.
At the moment, the major floods are affecting areas in regional Queensland. Students due to travel to Brisbane, and other states should not be concerned.
Students due to travel to Queensland to begin study in a flood affected area should:
- visit the Bureau of Meteorology website to check if they are travelling to a flood affected area
- check with their airline carrier to ensure their flight is running as scheduled, as some regional airports have closed
- keep in contact with their education provider and
- follow advice from their local emergency services and police, keep clear of flood waters and comply with evacuation orders.
Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) Extensions
QTAC has advised that it has extended the due date for notification of a change of preferences until 9 January 2011. The due date for acceptance of offers is 21 January 2011.
Applicants affected by the floods can call QTAC on 1300 467 822 (GO QTAC) if they wish to change their preferences and discuss or accept their offer(s) of enrolment.
For those students able to access Central Queensland University (CQU), assistance is available at the Student Centre, Building 5, where computers can be used by applicants.
Students in the Rockhampton area
Students scheduled to commence their term 1 studies at CQU Rockhampton, which is located within the flood zone, are advised to proceed with their current travel plans.
If for any reason access to Rockhampton is not available due to flooding, the University will make arrangements to welcome and host students at other CQU campuses until they can be located at Rockhampton. Students are advised to contact the University and remain in contact with the University as the weather conditions could hamper their ability to arrive on campus. For students in this area who need alternate accommodation, Rockhampton Council has prepared an evacuation centre at the Central Queensland Community Sports Complex, located at CQU. Students should contact the Local Disaster Coordination Centre on 1300 652 659 or email ldcc@rrc.qld.gov.au if they require this service.
People are advised to contact their airline carrier for information relating to the closure of Rockhampton airport.
