Testimonials
“In my graduate year we had a range of participants, from recent graduates through to mature age grads. Regardless of where you are in your career however, you can be guaranteed that joining a Graduate Program is without a doubt the best way to join the public service. The extensive training, orientation events, career introductions, rotations that allow you to see the breadth of the ‘business’ and the high level of support, all combine to make a very smooth entry into one of the most interesting careers you could ever hope to have.”
Casey, 27, Workplace Relations
“I applied for the Graduate Program after working full time for four years in schools. The Graduate Program gave me an introduction to the public sector and an understanding of the kind of work and opportunities available working for a government department.”
Lyndal, 27, Tertiary Skills and International
“There are many benefits to doing a Graduate Program even if you have extensive work experience or have previous tertiary education. As a mature age graduate I was looking to pursue a career in an area that interested me related to my studies in HRM and Law. What better organisation than the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations? However, I was still unsure exactly what I wanted to do, so being able to complete a couple of rotations in different areas really gave you the opportunity decide what kind of work I actually enjoyed doing. I worked in a frontline policy area and in Corporate HR, while I thought I would prefer policy, it turned out I much preferred working in an environment like corporate.”
Connor, 29, Corporate
“Not knowing what I wanted to do, the DEEWR Graduate Program gave me the diversity of work I was wanting after finishing uni. As a first office job, the Graduate Program was also able to prepare me for the culture and lifestyle of transitioning into work.”
Kacey, 23, Strategy

Testimonials
“The training sessions throughout the graduate program were extremely valuable as they provided a large amount of practice information in a informal and interactive setting.”
Ashleigh, 24, Strategy
“Undertaking the learning and development courses provided by the Department helped me to develop a range of transferable and specific skills that I can utilise in my current position. Taking part in these courses is a fantastic way to gain the experience and skills necessary to progress your career.”
Leigh, 26, Schools
“People recognise that Graduates are still learning and they take the time to invest in your learning and teach you new skills. Graduates are also often given greater opportunities to work on special projects, attend events and sometimes even travel for work.”
Tamara, 22, Schools
“I found the most useful learning and development was not the opportunity to attend a lot of courses, although they were interesting and valuable, but the on-the-job training and support I received from colleagues and supervisors. Everyone I have worked with has been really supportive, making sure I had a variety of tasks and was experienced and equipped to go forward to new things after the Graduate Program.”
Julia, 24, Tertiary Skills and International

Testimonials
“I was given so many amazing opportunities in my different placements. I was lucky enough to do one of my placements in the NT State Office, where I was given the opportunity to travel to remote Indigenous communities and experience DEEWR programs being implemented on the ground. Throughout the year I was also given the opportunity to attend conferences, manage a DEEWR stand at an expo, and attend Parliament House for Senate Estimates”
Tennealle, 26, Tertiary Skills and International
“Some of the opportunities that came my way were being able to participate in the Business Continuity Week and designing the presentation for it, and then seeing it run in all the offices. I was able to get further training to enhance my IT skills i.e. ITIL training. I greatly valued the opportunities of being trusted with meaningful work and at the same time being able to work alongside very experienced and skilled people, who personified the spirit of the APS by working hard but also living life to the fullest.”
Ahmed, Corporate
“The second rotation was also a good chance to stand back from the work undertaken in your first rotation and the excitement of moving to Canberra to reflect on what it is you truly what to do with your career.”
Connor, 29, Corporate
“In my rotations, I have been lucky enough to do a variety of work. I was lucky enough to organise and travel to various locations around Australia interviewing stakeholders (e.g. jobseekers, employers, employment services providers, local governments, etc) affected by DEEWR programs.”

Testimonials
“There have been many great social events during the graduate year, in particular the SNOG ski trip and end of year ball”.
Rachel, 24, Strategy
“The Graduate Program encouraged us to get to know people from our own department in both a professional and social setting. The Social Network of Graduates provided the opportunity to organise and participate in events and outings with graduates from other departments throughout the APS. This was a lot of fun and two highlights were the ski trip weekend and the interdepartmental sports carnival.” Richard, Tertiary Skills and International
“A major drawcard of the Graduate Program was the opportunity to socialise with grads from DEEWR and other departments through a range of formal and non formal events. Many social events were planned internally by and for DEEWR graduates, and the Social Network of Graduates provided a valuable chance to meet and network with graduates from other agencies.”
Alana, 26, Employment
